CcOaNpNtEuCrTe (GIF preview of video), video collage using 100+ smartphone web commercials, 1m 27s (loop), 2016
The source media for the GIFs and videos in the iWash series are screen recordings that I take while surfing the web. These recordings reflect not only my own browsing habits and the pages I visit, but I also "mine" the history results from publicly accessible computers as way of introducing an element of chance and anonymity as I gather my source material.
The work in the iWash series is rooted in the practice of décollage. I treat the recorded websites (hundreds for each piece) as if they were literally (paper) pages layered on top of one another. I utilize key filters to “tear away” elements from each layer, leaving abstract fragments and bits of visual information behind. These are then recombined and layered to create new compositions and textures.
